Born in England and raised in Barbados, Sandra’s love for storytelling and writing became apparent at an early age. Growing up, she found inspiration in the vibrant culture and history of her island home, as well as the works of literary giants such as George Lamming, Kamau Brathwaite, Derek Walcott, Samuel Selvon and other Caribbean writers, as well as some British writers.
In addition to her journalism work, Sandra recently authored her debut novel, Going Home To “Mother”. The collection was written during lockdown and was published in 2022. It tells the stories of 24 young men and women who journeyed to the United Kingdom to search for a better life, only to discover on arrival that the picture was not as rosy as they’d been told. The novel has been praised for its vivid descriptions of their experiences, trials and achievements.
Sandra is a graduate of the University of the West Indies, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in English. She is a strong advocate for education and self-empowerment, and believes in the power of storytelling to educate, inspire and be thought-provoking.
When she’s not writing, Sandra enjoys exploring the beaches and countryside of Barbados, watching movies, attending church and spending time with her family.
